Lollapalooza is an annual festival that was created in 1991 by Jane’s Addiction frontman Perry Ferrell. The first Lollapalooza was intended to be a farewell tour for Jane’s Addiction, but it’s massive success lead Ferrell to continue the tour annually.
The festival ran annually from 1991 until 1997; initially as a tour across North America. It was revived briefly in 2003, but it became clear that touring the festival would not lead to it’s expansion. In 2005, the festival sought sponsorship and became a weekend event in Chicago’s Grant Park. This will be the festival’s fifth year in Grant Park.
Past performers at Lollapalooza include: Pearl Jam, Rage Against the Machine, Nine Inch Nails, Jane’s Addiction, The Smashing Pumpkins, Alice in Chains, Tool, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Hole, and Depeche Mode.
