Cirque du Soleil immediately swung into a more than stellar performance at last night’s 84th Academy Awards. With music composed by Danny Elfman, the acrobatic cast depicted “what it’s like to go to the movies.” It was flips and somersaults galore, and trapeze artists were flying out from every end of the auditorium. Despite a minor somersault misjudgement on the part of one of the cast members, host Billy Crystal’s take on the performance was still “wow, I pulled a hamstring just watching that”; needless to say, the Cirque wowed as usual. Although last night was about showing the endless possibilities of film, Cirque du Soleil proved that they can accomplish the near impossible as well.
