Elle Goulding is an absolutely beautiful and unbelievably talented 25 year songstress, originally hailing from the UK. Ellie’s passionate and stimulating music has been slowing making it’s way over to North America from London, England. We first took notice of her a few years ago when she started making waves in online communities, like Tumblr and YouTube. People loved not only her music, but her awesome style and her extremely cute personality. She started hitting radio waves and the public eye with her 2010 album Lights, featuring hits like “Lights” and “Starry Eyes”. Some bigger stations actually are still only grabbing onto this album now, even though it’s over 2 years old and she’s been making music since 2007.
Last night Toronto had the pleasure of being graced by Ellie Goulding at Sound Academy. After our interview with her earlier that day (coming soon), we were even more excited to see her perform. With the recent release of her new album Halcyon, with hits like “Anything Could Happen” and “I Know You Care”, we were looking forward to seeing what the new tracks sounded like live. We were not disappointed.
Sound Academy was packed and that honestly didn’t surprise us. Ellie hit the stage and she told the audience that she hadn’t played to such a big crowd in quite a while. Every time she opened her mouth to speak, you could her everyone start chattering talking about how cute she was and how much they loved her accent. Obviously we’ve all heard English accents before, but hers was actually so adorable and extremely sweet. She chatted with the crowd, made jokes and really made it feel like an intimate show.
Musically, the show was unreal! She played her drums, did an acoustic version of “Guns & Horses” and sang “I Know Your Care” accompanied by only the piano, both of which are new songs. During her encore we also got to hear one of her most popular covers, “Your Song” originally by Elton John. Her ballad style songs had the crowd silent and in awe of her natural talent. She performed “Explosions” and said that was one of the first tracks written for the album and earlier on “My Blood” which she said is probably one of her favourites from the new album. The entire show was a display of beauty and raw talent.
