Chauncey ‘Hit-Boy’ Hollis is best known for his work as a producer. He has, in the past, done work for Jay-Z, Kanye West, A$AP Rocky, Lil’ Wayne and the list goes on and on. He is currently working on new music with Britney Spears and Mariah Carey, but this past summer we were given a different side of Hit-Boy.
In August 2012 he released HITstory his debut rap album that featured the G.O.O.D. Music signee rapping instead of his usual beat-making ways. Today he released 1 of 4 releases he’s made off the album; this one entitled ‘Brake Lights.’
Though I love Hit-Boy’s work as a producer, I can’t quite feel the same excitement about his rapping. His flow is week, his voice is somewhat mono-tone and his rhyme schemes seem a bit elementary all of which points to a premature jump into a craft that has not been developed. Not to be disrespectful or anything but I absolutely love Hit-Boy as a producer and I would hate to see his reputation decline because of an attempt to rap. If he does continue on this route I’d hope that next time he releases another rap album he does it properly with good promotion, distribution and a proper amount of preparation to better his craft as a rapper.
Regardless, the video for ‘Brake Lights‘ is pretty artistic and mysterious, the type of video that I love, so it’s definitely a good watch through once or twice. Check it out and let us know what you think!
