Olly Murs performed at the Phoenix Concert theatre last night for his one and only Canadian stop on his Right Place, Right Time tour. His over an hour set was paced so well with a blend of fast songs at the beginning to get the party started, and some of his slower songs to show his softer side. He wore a nice blazer and his trademark hat, getting all the girls swooning.
He opened with “Army of Two” followed by one of his hits “Dance With Me Tonight,” which was one of the loudest crowd reactions he got during the show. He danced and moved across the stage a lot, proving he is a well rounded performer. One of the highlights of the show was when he covered “Superstition” by Stevie Wonder, the song he sang at his X Factor audition.
His version was cool and brought the audience back in time from where he actually started. One of my personal favourites was when he sang “Hand On Heart,” off his album Right Place, Right Time. It’s a slower song, but the lyrics are beautiful and it was my fave performance of the night.
He also talked a lot to the audience, which was a great way to interact and connect with them. He asked the audience simple questions about himself like what his middle name is, his age and what show he got his rise to fame. Everyone knew all the answers, getting a chuckle out of Olly. He performed some of his older songs like “Personal” and “I’ve Tried Everything”, and closed the night with “Troublemaker.”
Last summer he opened up for One Direction, but this is his first headlining tour in North America. The show last night was sold out, which is a great sign that Olly will be back to perform. Hopefully Toronto is making a good enough impression on him so he will come back soon!
