Call us optimistic if you will, but we stayed home last night to watch the MTV VMAs 2013 in the hopes of being shocked and appalled by the next generation’s provocative performances and outrageous award speeches. Instead, we were underwhelmed by what passes for edgy these days. Lady Gaga opened the show taking style inspiration from Sponge Bob and assuming that five different costume changes somehow substitutes for creative content. Miley Cyrus sang a duet of “Blurred Lines” with Robin Thicke while touching herself with a giant foam finger. Dude, that’s not provocative – that’s just dry-humping for one. At least Madonna had the decency to offend entire nations by rubbing her groin with a flag, and when Michael Jackson did it, he just straight out went for it with a raw hand. Are we old and bitter? Maybe. But if we are, so are some of our favourite people who we follow on Twitter. Here are the best tweets about the MTV VMAs 2013 from some of our favourite Twitter friends.
