A couple weeks ago, I had the opportunity to check out an up-and-coming band called The Matinée. And I’ve been obsessed with them ever since.
They had a November residency at the Dakota Tavern in Toronto and when I checked out the show, they had lots of energy and were very talented. Guitars and banjos lined one side of the stage, with drums on the other. Even though the actual stage was small, the band owned it, having the whole audience engaged.
They are five guys from British Columbia who have known each other since high school, according to their website. They are a roots-rockers band that have many soulful songs. One of my favourites is “Young & Lazy.” It’s an upbeat song that can get you in the right kind of mood. I also loved their performance of “On Our Own.” It really showed off their talent – they can perform well live and they write amazing songs. The songs are all off their debut album We Swore We’d See The Sunrise that came out in February.
Definitly check them out if you’re interested in new, Canadian talent. To get you hooked, watch their music video for “The Road” below.
