I’d never heard of MØ before I listened to this album. She’s a Danish singer who’s pushing musical boundaries with this incredible album, No Mythologies To Follow.
The album came out March 10, and is a mixture between electronic pop and dance music. MØ, who’s real name is Karen Marie Orsted, has a similar tone to her voice as Gwen Stefani, but her music is nothing comparable. It’s unique and ambitious.
It’s her debut album, and it has been very well recieved among critics. Dazed & Confused has described it as, “fragile and precious songs with a defiant toughness.” I have to agree that there’s an edgy and defiant quality to it. The strength in her voice partnered with the softer charisma of the music results in a balanced and beautiful musical creation.
The album features artists such as Diplo on her track “XXX 88.” The single has an electronic/R&B sounding element to it. Her voice counters the sharpness of the music with a soulful and full-bodied tone. It sounds so strong, but at the same time there’s a graceful quality to it, like Lana Del Ray meets Gwen Stefani.
The newest single off the album is “Don’t Wanna Dance.” It has an earthy essence to it, and the chorus is where it really picks up with a nice rock steady drum beat. Ironically, it makes you want to dance. MØ will be heading on a European headline tour this March- May. No Mythologies To Follow was definitely a hit and is worth investing the time to listen to.
