ALBUM REVIEW: Swollen Members – ‘Brand New Day’

Canadian hip hop veterans Swollen Members are back with their ninth studio album Brand New Day, a fitting name after being revitalized in 2009.

The entire album has a great sound and is versatile enough that even if hip hop is not really your speed, you can still enjoy the tracks. My favourite track off the album though, hands down, has to be “Cock Blocker.” Besides being funny, the song has a smooth flow and the lyrics are so perfectly placed it baffles my mind. Think Eminem circa 2009 with “We Made You” and “Ass Like That” and that’s what this group was able to accomplish, but better.

Another song you should check out is “Park Bench,” which features the most infectious and catchy beat; towards the middle of the song Madchild is on a park bench in his old age looking at all he has done as a kid. Lastly, I suggest you also check out “Cold Sweat” because it sounds wicked cool.

What I like about this album is that you cannot just listen to the songs for the sake of listening to them. There is so much going on lyrically that it challenges you to go deep and hear what it is the artists are trying to say. Swollen Members is effectively using music as a medium to spark thought and discussion which isn’t overly common in music today.

“We have all become forward-thinkers and our level of expression has benefited. This album is a landmark for us in that it doesn’t feature any guests. Our belief system has been renewed and we agreed that between the amazing production and the complexity of the lyrical value, we could let Brand New Day speak for itself,” Prevail said in a press release.
