Meghan Trainor is a 20-year-old singer/songwriter based in Nashville, Tennesse who is taking the music industry by storm! Her uber-catchy song “All About That Bass” was released last week and has been pumping listeners up with body confidence ever since.
Trainor celebrates all body types and even makes a few digs at the unrealistic standards promoted by the beauty and fashion industries with lyrics like “I see them magazines/ Working that Photoshop/ We know that shit ain’t real, come on now make it stop/ If you’ve got beauty beauty/ Just raise ’em up/ ‘Cuz every inch of you is perfect from the bottom to the top.”
She goes on to dub “skinny bitches” as overrated while reflecting on the advice her mother gave her by singing: “Yeah my mama she told me don’t worry about your size/ She says boys like a little more booty to hold at night/ You know I won’t be no stick figure, silicone Barbie doll/ So if that’s what you’re into then go ahead and move along.”
With its doo-wop infused melody, the retro track reminds us a bit of Ariana Grande‘s “Boyfriend Material,” yet still finds a way to be refreshingly original.
In the music video for the tune, Trainor and friends (including Vine celebrity Sione Maraschino) are dancing around in perfectly pastel outfits while letting us know that they are “all about that bass, no treble.”
Laced with an uplifting message and the promise to “bring booty back,” “All About That Bass” is sure to be the ultimate summer jam. We are so down.
