It’s official. Longtime MuchMusic VJ/MTV personality Lauren Toyota is leaving both channels.
Yesterday, The Globe and Mail published an article stating that 91 jobs have been cut from Bell Media’s in-house production division, with channels like MuchMusic, MTV, and E! taking serious cuts in staff. The cuts were made due to the network’s “financial pressure in its advertising and subscription TV services.”
In the article, Bell Media president Kevin Crull stated, “Kids do not watch music videos on television. You’re not going to wait for somebody to program a music video when you have a million available on Vevo. And so that has hurt the channel.”
Toyota responded to MuchMusic and MTV related questions on Twitter today, tweeting out the article along with the hashtags #RIPMUCH #RIPMTV and admitted that she is in fact “gone” from the channels.
She also addressed the situation in a statement on her Facebook page writing out: “It’s the only way to let you all know… I’m moving on from Much & MTV and onto bigger and better adventures. Thanks to all the passionate music fans and die hard Degrassi fans that have shared their love along the way. You are what made these the best years so far! See you all soon xo.”
Toyota’s hit talk-style show After Degrassi, which she co-hosts with Phoebe Dkystra, has been cancelled due to the cuts.
While we have to admit that we’re totally bummed about this news, we’re even more excited to see what the future holds for Toyota! She will be missed.
