Interview With: Tebey

I got the chance to do an email interview with Canadian country singer Tebey! Read more to learn about his time in Prince Edward Island along with what song he wrote for British boy band One Direction. It’s all below!

Vanessa Francone: Your new video “Now I Do” was shot on location in PEI during the Cavendish Beach Music Festival. Was it your first time in that part of Canada? What was your favourite part of the trip?

Tebey: I had only been to the Maritimes once before, and never to PEI.  The people of PEI are so hospitable, which makes me eager to get back.  The best part of the trip was definitely my set at Cavendish Beach Music Festival.  That was the biggest crowd I have ever played for, and having them sing the words of “Wake Me Up” back to me was incredible!

VF: What was the festival atmosphere like? Was it different from other festivals you’ve performed in the past?

T: The cool thing about Cavendish Beach Music Fest is there’s no seating.  The fans are jammed right up against the stage as far as you can see!

VF: You do a lot of song writing for other artists. Besides your own music, what’s the one song of you’re most proud of that you’ve written for another artist?

T: I am extremely proud to have two songs on One Direction’s Take Me Home album, simply because it has sold nearly 7 million copies worldwide.  But I am also very proud of the song “When I See You Again,” which was a top 10 single for Emerson Drive.  It was inspired by their band mates Patricks’ death, and the song’s lyrics really hit home with a lot of people.

VF: Do you have a particular artist in mind when you write music? Or do you write the song first and find a match then?

T: It depends.  Sometimes I take a swing directly at an artist who I know is making an album.  But often a song will find a home with someone completely different than who I originally intended.

VF: I saw that you helped write the One Direction song “They Don’t Know About Us.” How did that happen? Take me through the process.

T: I wrote that song in Nashville one day without any one particular in mind.  My manager knows their A&R at Sony Music in London, and sent it to them.  After a few rounds of re writes, I was flown to London to record it with the boys.  I’m listed as vocal producer on that track in the album booklet.

VF: You first started singing in your church. Do you ever go back? If so, what’s that like?

T: I actually haven’t been back to my childhood church in many years.  But I did take a drive around my old neighbourhood a few weeks ago to see how much it had changed over the years.

VF: Since I am from BestFan, I would like to know what you are a ‘best fan’ of.

T: I’m a ‘best fan’ of Maroon 5 and sushi.  Not necessarily together 😉
