Leighton Meester is no stranger to the spotlight. Thanks to her portrayal of Blair Waldorf – the Queen Bee everyone loved to hate – on the hit CW show Gossip Girl, Meester has had her fair share of buzz.
Her latest career endeavor comes in the form of her independently-released debut album, Heartstrings.
Produced by Jeff Trot, Meester’s new release is a far cry from the country-laden tracks she recorded for the 2010 movie Country Strong and the club-pop songs she’s lent her vocals to in the past (Cobra Starship‘s “Good Girls Go Back” and her single “Somebody To Love” featuring Robin Thicke, just to name a few). Instead, Heartstrings blends together folk, singer-songwriter and dream-pop elements to create a refreshingly original sound.
“Entitled” is the first track I listened to and it’s definitely my favorite. Laced with an alternative folk-pop melody with an almost country-inspired flair, the tune perfectly sums up Meester’s transition away from the electro-pop genre and proves she can hold her own as an artist.
“LA” reminds me of something off of Ingrid Michaelson’s 2009 release “Everybody,” only with a bit more emphasis placed on a folk-heavy melody.
For fans of Meester’s previous dance-pop jams, “Good For One Thing” is probably the song for you. It manages to stay true to the overall indie singer-songwriter sound while also offering up a bit more of a pop-heavy, less ethereal sound.
All in all, Heartstrings is full of enticing tracks that give off an almost trance-enducing vibe and truly showcase Meester’s stunning vocal abilities.
