With Straight Outta Compton determined to rock the world when it comes out at the end of the week, it’s interesting to look back at the history of the band and the history of film. One of the most interesting things I find is that Ice Cube’s son is playing Ice Cube in the movie. But then you realize that Ice Cube is actually in a lot of stuff and he’s really not that bad! So, in honor of Ice Cube’s surprisingly funny acting career, I give you the top five hip hop artist turned actors.
5. Ice Cube
Well let’s start with the man himself, Ice Cube. He actually started on screen in Boyz in the Hood, but I think most people would recognize him first from Friday opposite Chris Tucker. After that, he was in some less then credited movies *cough* Anaconda *cough,* but I think most recently he has definitely found a niche as the “angry black man” in films like Ride Along and the hilarious Jump Street series. He has this amazing ability to be so angry and absolutely lose it, to a both hilarious and somehow scary effect. Ice Cube probably isn’t going anywhere anytime soon, especially with Barbershop 3 on the way.
Ludacris has similarly found a niche, albeit a much more specific one. Pretty much just the Fast and the Furious movies. The thing is, he is not a bad actor and really plays the role of Tej in those movies very well. He pops in and out of other movies as supporting roles, but the Fast and the Furious series is where he makes his real money and he has a much better sense of comedic timing then anybody would have thought. So we will probably be seeing him in the next 20 Fast and Furious movies and that isn’t a bad thing.
Tupac is one of the most legendary rappers of all time, but he also left his mark on the silver screen. He only has ten acting credits to his name, but the one most people will remember and be familiar with is his role from Juice, as inner city kid Bishop. This showed off Tupac and some of his great acting capabilities. He equips himself well for the dramatic and showy scenes, but also feels very natural within the film and on camera in general. He was a great musician and actor that we all wish was still around today. Rest in Peace Tupac.
2. Will Smith
Know this is an article all about how, some rappers turned to actors and got spun right round, so I’d like to take a second to talk about how we came to Will Smith’s acting career. Aside from that horrible intro, Will Smith was actually The Fresh Prince before it was a show. He got noticed for his rapping skills and was picked up to do the show and we all know the story from there. One of the most charismatic actors in history was spawned form hip hop, along with the funniest and heartfelt shows too. What would we do without Will Smith and his amazing talent? From Independence Day to Pursuit of Happiness to Men in Black and Bad Boys? Although his acting career overshadows his rapping, we all know where he came from.
1. Mark Wahlberg
I bet you forgot about this. Well I don’t forget. I never forget. BASK IN THE GLORY OF MARKY MARK.
