Who to expect at OVO Fest 2015

One of the reasons that Drake‘s OVO Fest has become such a staple is that it plays on the fact that fans love the unknown. Not knowing what to expect and being surprised by unlikely acts during the much anticipated Monday will be such a rush – I think it’s safe to say that we might have a ‘gambling problem’.

Now for the one question that is on everyone’s mind – who can we expect? What can Drake do for Toronto this year that’s he’s never done before? This year is quite special because it will be the 6th Annual OVO Festival in the 6ix. The new hashtag will be #6thInThe6ix – you can thank me later for that one!

Well, here we have it, folks. Here are my predictions for who to expect this year:

Future:

Atlanta’s hip-hop trap star has close ties to Drake. According to an interview with the Breakfast Club, Future suggested that he might be in Toronto during that weekend. Recently, his latest album release, Dirty Sprite 2 has been selling like hot cakes. With numerous collaborations with Drake like ‘Tony Montana,” “Where Ya At,” “Never Satisfied” and as the opening act for Drake’s last tour, there’s probably a high chance that we’ll get to see Future hit the stage for a performance we won’t want to miss.

Fetty Wap:

Fetty has had an incredible year. He recently joined Lil’ Wayne and Eminem in reaching a Hot 100 Chart Milestone. His latest singles include “Trap Queen,” “Again,” “679,” and “My Way” featuring Drake. If there’s one thing Drake loves to do, it’s putting on artists that fans can turn up to, and there’s no better way than to bring out the number one artist of the summer.

The Game:

Maybe a longshot, but anything is possible at OVO. The Compton MC has been trying to make his way across the border for several years with no luck. His ties with Drake might be the key and OVO is the stage he definitely needs to be on. With his latest single, “100” featuring Drake and a number of classics under his belt, fans would drop their jaws if the boy brought out Compton’s own to the Toronto stage. Imagine, thousands of fans singing his classics like, “This is How We Do It,” “Hate It Or Love It,” and “One Blood.” I mean if 50 Cent made it last year, why not Game, right?

OVO Sound Crew: ILOVEMAKONNEN & P. Reign:

Seeing that these OVO Sound artists have yet to hit the main stage in the past, I’m sure this will be the year that all changes. ILOVEMAKONNEN is conveniently playing at Veld, so it’s likely that we’ll be partying with the Atlanta MC like it’s a Tuesday. Meanwhile, P. Reign has been building a huge buzz with his song, “DnF,” “Realest In The City,” and “We Them N*ggas.” Drake loves introducing his fans to new artists under OVO Sound like he did last year with Majid Jordan and PARTYNEXTDOOR. I’m sure the same will happen this Monday.

A$AP Rocky:

A$APRockyDrake

Just like ILOVEMAKONNEN, A$AP Rocky will be joining the Veld Festival stage. With longtime connections to the Toronto star and his new found connection with ILOVEMAKONNEN, who’s to say that A$AP Rocky won’t be joining the stage yet again? It might be time to perform his oldie but a goodie track, “F*ckin Problem” or he may end up joining P. Reign for “We Them N*ggas.”

Kendrick Lamar:

Call him what you want – King Kendrick, K. Dot, K Lamar – I have a little gut feeling that we can expect the Compton MC to step onto the OVO stage. Why? Just follow me on this. The current line-up for the first day has J. Cole and Big Sean. A$AP Rocky is in town, and so is Kendrick Lamar. Since all four of those artist have been dubbed the new generation of hip-hop, how great would it be if all four of them got on stage together? It would literally send hip-hop fans through the roof.

It was only last week that Kendrick Lamar was in Ontario for his show at WayHome Music Festival and this weekend he’s in Montreal for Osheaga, which is right around the corner. Chances are pretty likely that he might come through – but outside of a momentous hip-hop moment, how dope would it be if Drake and Kendrick did ‘Poetic Justice’?

Norm Kelly:

Some may say that this is #Laughable, but chances are the Toronto politician will make his way to the OVO stage. Obviously not for a song, but just to accompany Drake for his recent support in the week -ong hip-hop battle against Meek Mill. Norm Kelly, like an honourable Torontonian, stepped into the battle and spoke his mind about Meek. He literally bullied Meek on social media. He became one of the most talked about politicians out of Toronto (obviously outside of Mayor Rob Ford). Who knows, maybe Drake will present him with a trophy for his valiant effort in holding the OVO crew down.

Travi$ Scott

DrakeTravisScott

I’m a huge fan of Travi$ Scott. He’s signed with G.O.O.D. Music and Grand Hustle, and I personally think he would be great fit for this year’s OVO, he has strong ties with Drake and is one hell of a performer. You may not know all his songs, but not matter what, you can’t deny how impactful his skills are as a performer. You don’t even need to know the words, but you’ll definitely be jumping and shouting at the top of your lungs at his performace. Don’t underestimate this rising star, he’s definitely one to watch.

Erykah Badu

If Drake can’t bring out Nicki Minaj due to her support for Meek Mill, or Madonna because of their little situation at Coachella – what other strong, independent woman do you think he might be able to bring out? Well, let me just quote a Drake line real quick: “Remember one night, I was at Erykah Badu’s house” *sips tea*, now you’re thinking about it? But, hey, that’s none of my business.

Dr. Dre

DrakeDrDre

Drake has an itch to bring out an artist nobody would ever expect. Since the first year of the show, he’s brought out Eminem, Jay-Z, Mase, TLC, and many more. You might think I’m crazy for saying this, but I truly believe that this is highly possible. It all started when Ice Cube mentioned the fact that Dr. Dre would be releasing a body of work to support the new Straight Outta Compton movie as early as August 1. He has also been rumoured to be working on doing a NWA tour across Europe.

As we know, Drake has strong ties as an ambassador for the new Apple Music, run by Jimmy Iovine and none other than Dr. Dre. A few months ago, Drake appeared in a photo with Dr. Dre, which flew under the radar. In addition, Drake has a business deal to run the OVO Sound radio on Apple Music exclusively.

Let’s put the facts together: new music from Dr. Dre premiering on the August weekend, Dr. Dre is preparing to hit the stage after many years, the his connects with Apple Music and Drake. You getting the picture – what’s the best place to showcase your new music? Are we on the same page? If he comes out, just remember who said it first.

Honorable Mentions: Kevin Hart, Lebron James, Fabolous
