Our host Sharon got to chat with Derek Wilson of the Toronto band Bravestation recently to find out about their new music and upcoming projects. Check out what we learned about them below!
The band moved to Toronto in 2008 from Brockville, ON and have been steadily creating music for the past few years. Their approach is to release smaller bodies of work frequently due to the fact that artists can spend a lot of time on an album and not receive as many plays. Although their fifth release “V”came out just this past September, they are already working on the next EP.
Their newest music video for the song “Actors” actually received funding from MuchFACT which was exciting for the boys as it is a very competitive fund for musicians to gain access to. They filmed the video at Style Garage and we think it turned out pretty cool check it out below:
CBC Radio 3 who are supportive of independent Canadian artists also included “Actors” on their chart at #16 just last week.
When I asked Derek about how the band landed such great opportunities with CBC and MuchFACT he spoke very highly of the band’s label and management. He also told me a bit about how their most recent EP “V” was a transition and conscious effort towards catchier, more commercially friendly singles while maintaining the bands artistic integrity. It really is very important to have a strong team especially in such a competitive industry and finding a way to “land on the good side of pop”. The band also received support from The Frontside Group– a radio promo company that helped get Bravestation’s music to more fans.
In terms of upcoming shows, the band was scheduled to play a set at their label Culvert Music’s holiday party last night at the Drake Hotel. However, they will definitely be posting more shows in the new year so to stay up to date be sure to follow these guys on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram!
