Happy New Year BestFans! Now that 2015 has come to an end we decided to create a list of the most memorable moments in pop culture from the past year.
Taylor Swift’s open letter to Apple.
When Apple announced that they would be offering the Apple Music streaming service free to fans for the first 3 months, Taylor tweeted to them with a link to her open letter on her tumblr page. Her letter totally paid off because the very next day Apple executive Eddy Cue tweeted back to Taylor with “We hear you @taylorswift13 and indie artists. Love apple” and announced Apple would in fact pay artists throughout the free 3 month trial. Of course after Taylor and Apple became friends again she decided to put her album on Apple Music and saying it was first time she felt it was right to stream her album. Just this month on her 26th birthday she also tweeted that Apple Music will exclusively debut her “1989 World Tour Live” film. Taylor, you are awesome! We can’t wait to see what’s next in 2016.
Wrong Miss Universe winner announced
The host of Miss Universe 2015, Steve Harvey wrongfully named Miss Colombia the winner when she was actually supposed to be the first runner up. Not sure how none of the staff working the event corrected him sooner LOL. They had already handed Miss Colombia (Ariadna Gutierrez ) her crown, flowers and sach yet nobody seemed to hesitate so maybe the event staff had no idea either? So embarrassing it probably would have been better to just leave her as the winner to avoid looking so unorganized. The poor girl who actually won Miss Philippines (Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach) looked super awkward getting named Miss Universe in the end as they removed the crown from Miss Colombia to give to her. Pretty sure Steve will not be hosting Miss Universe next time.
Bruce becomes Caitlyn
In April during a 20/20 interview with Diane Sawyer, Jenner came out as a transgender woman. In June Caitlyn debuted her new image and appeared on the cover of Vanity Fair magazine with the caption “Call Me Caitlyn”. Jenner gained over 1 million followers in 4 hours. It has been a huge year for her which including winning a Teen Choice Award for “social media queen” as well as named one of Glamour’s “25 Glamour Women of the Year” named “Trans Champion”. She also had an 8 part documentary series called “I Am Cait” which premiered on E! to an audience of 2.7 million viewers talking about her transition, and how it has affected her relationship with family and friends. Caitlyn has become a role model to the transgender community and the show’s second season will air in the new year.
Silento’s “Watch Me (Whip/ Nae Nae)” The debut single was released in March 2015 and the music video went absolutely viral on youtube when released in June. Although it did not make the number one spot on the Billboard charts, the dance moves surely were ones to remember including the “Whip” and “Nae Nae”.
Zayn Malik leaves One Direction. He announced back in March that he would be leaving the band via Facebook in a note to fans stating “My life with One Direction has been more than I could ever have imagined. But, after five years, I feel like it is now the right time for me to leave the band. I’d like to apologize to the fans if I’ve let anyone down, but I have to do what feels right in my heart. I am leaving because I want to be a normal 22-year-old who is able to relax and have some private time out of the spotlight,” He released a solo demo less than one week later “I won’t mind” which then got removed shortly afterwards. The band seems to be doing just fine without him though with a successful tour and released their newest album “Made In The AM” on November 13th, 2015.
Adele’s comeback
She released her first single in three years titled “Hello” in anticipation of her third album “25”. The song was released on October 23rd and reached number one in 28 different countries. The music video for “Hello” broke Vevo records with 27 million views within 24 hours. Her album “25” released on November 20th was also massively successful. The album sold over 3 million copies in the first week. She has admitted to have struggled writing this album and had writers block for quite some time. Were so glad she managed to complete it though as this album is amazing!
Drake’s “Hotline Bling”
This song definitely was one of the most memorable of 2015 and although fans were sad that it never actually made the number one spot on the Billboard charts he did have massive success when the video was debuted on Apple Music. There have been memes created by fans all over the world using his video with latin music, Bollywood music, Justin Bieber’s “What Do You Mean”, The Rugrats theme song, Charlie Brown theme song just to name a few. Drake’s dance moves can literally be used for any genre of music and its awesome. Funny enough, it was originally released on SoundCloud during the time of Drake’s beef with Meek Mill when he also released the diss track “Back To Back”. That track actually ended up getting nominated for a Grammy as “best rap performance”.
Justin Bieber’s return to music
Beliebers worldwide rejoiced when J Biebs first announced his single “What Do You Mean” via his celebrity endorsement month long countdown. The single debuted at #1 on the hot 100 charts. His huge success may have been helped by the earlier release of his “Where Are You Now” collab with Diplo and Skrillex and also the Bieber roast on Comedy Central. He then released his hugely successful fourth album “Purpose” on November 13th following tons of amazing promo which definitely build up hype for this release. He released the track list for the album using cool graffit art posted to Instagram, he appeared on Ellen several times for Bieber Week, he had a “Purpose Pop Up Shop” in Toronto (bestfan was also there of course) and then absolutely killed it by releasing a series of artistic music videos for all 13 tracks on the album. The number of people who now have Bieber Fever after this past year is at an all time high.
And those have been our picks for the most memorable moments of 2015. Be sure to tweet us letting us know your favourite!
