Featured Artist: Melanie Martinez

Twenty year old Melanie Martinez from Baldwin, NY is our Featured Artist this week for so many reasons, however the biggest reason of all is her incredibly unique style that I believe everyone needs to know about!!

A friend recently told me to check out her music since I’m always on the lookout for good songs to include in our weekly Fresh Music Friday video segments, so I decided to listen to her album ‘Cry Baby’ on Spotify. Let me tell you, this album is GOLD. So different from anything that I have listened to in a long time. Her sound is kind of a mix of pop, electronic and hip hop. Although I’m not usually a fan of listening to too many different sounds on one track, her music is incredible. Every sound/ beat is fit into every part of each song very precisely.

Martinez got her first real step into stardom when she became a contestant on season three of The Voice in 2012 after she auditioned with a cover of Britney Spears‘ “Toxic”. She ended up on Team Adam and stayed on the show until the fifth week, at which point she was eliminated.

After The Voice, Melanie continued writing and eventually signed with Atlantic records in 2014. Her debut single “Dollhouse” was released on April 22nd, 2014 and the music video has now reached over 30 million views on YouTube.

Her debut studio album ‘Cry Baby’ was released on August 14, 2015 following the release of her singles “Pity Party”, “Soap”, and “Sippy Cup”. The album tells the story of “Cry Baby” a fictional character that resembles Melanie’s journey of becoming more comfortable with herself, only with a darker more exaggerated twist. All the songs and music videos connect with each other similar to a children’s storybook.

The production quality of her music videos are incredible which may be partly due to the fact that Martinez is also a photographer and had a clear image of what she wanted them to look like. She currently has millions of views on every single video.

Fans who purchase the CD or vinyl also receive an illustrated storybook created by Chloe Tersigni.

Martinez is currently on tour bringing to life Cry Baby’s story on stage and we can’t wait to see it! Be sure to get your tickets here. Sadly, her Toronto show at the Danforth music hall on March 21st is already sold out- so if you’re already going tag us in your pics and we’ll share them!

‘Cry Baby’ is available now on iTunes here. Check out some of Melanie’s videos below:
