Last night the first annual ‘iHeart Radio Fest’ hit Toronto as part of Canadian Music Week. Fans and contest winners packed the Sheraton Centre Grand Ballroom and were ready to have a good time! Warming up the audience and spinning a fantastic mix of today’s hits in between acts was DJ Starting From Scratch.
The first performer of the night was Jocelyn Alice who’s powerful voice and heartfelt lyrics grabbed the audience’s attention. She bopped about the stage and talked about how she’s happy to be back in Canada after completing a U.S. radio tour. Her most popular song of the night was her hit “Jackpot”
Coleman Hell kept the party going with his peppy dance moves and catchy tunes. He opened his set with his song “Fireproof” and really got the crowd into it. He then lead into his next song, “Northern Soul” by talking about growing up in Thunder Bay, Ontario and what it feels like to be in middle of nowhere. During Hell’s final song, “2 Heads” fans sang and danced along.
Up and coming star Scott Helman was next on the bill, he opened his set with “Tika” and was my personal favourite performer of the night. His cool stage presence and catchy songs had fans singing along loudly with his hit singles, “Machine”, “That Sweater”, and “Bungalow”
Kardinal Offishall introduced the next performer, Shawn Hook as Canada’s rising star as he recently performed and appeared on Live with Kelly and Michael and Jimmy Kimmel Live. Hook started off on the piano singing “In Over My Head” and continued to show off his fantastic vocals on “Bad Girls” and his hit single “Sound of Your Heart”. I left the show with “Sound of Your Heart” stuck in my head!
Without a doubt, majority of the audience was in attendance to see the next act, Tegan & Sara. Fans excitedly welcomed the girls to the stage and sang along to every word during their 10-song set. While I was expecting a little more stage presence considering how upbeat their songs are, I was really impressed by how vocally on point they were. Tegan & Sara’s new album, ‘Love You To Death‘ drops on June 3rd.
The final performance of the night was from X Ambassadors, who hit the stage at 11pm and rocked it! While most of the audience left after Tegan & Sara, the ones that stayed definitely loved the band’s energetic performance. They performed about eight songs and were really interactive with the audience, lead singer Sam Harris stood on the audience barricade a few times to get closer to the fans. A cool fan moment happened at the end of the show, when a female fan gave Harris a big painting as a gift.
I thoroughly enjoyed my night out attending the ‘iHeart Radio Fest’ and look forward to next year’s lineup.
