Canadian Music Week: Universal Music Canada’s 2016 Showcase

Last night, our team had the chance to attend a pretty cool Canadian Music Week event held at the Revival Bar in Toronto. It was hosted by Universal Music Canada and featured several artists – both up & comers and prominent singers in today’s music industry.

The event had a very specialized theme to give us the ambience of an airport. Within the design, they have a travel-time board with the performing artists names and set times displayed on the digital screen, similar to how flights listings are displayed at an airport. Each of the listed artist at set time of ten minute throughout the night, which panned out to two songs per artist. Personally, there were a few artists I weren’t familiar with, but the beauty of showcases is that it opens us (including myself) up to new music, genres, artists, that might end up on our daily playlists.

Tori Kelly – I was pretty upset we got into the venue just after she finished her set. However we are sure her performance was amazing! Tori originally got her start in music through youtube and caught the attention of Scooter Braun after her cover of Frank Ocean’s “Thinkin Bout You” went viral. Most recently, Kelly partnered up with Amy Grant for the 25th anniversary re-release of “Baby Baby“.

Jahkoy – He was in the middle of his set when we arrived and seemed to have great energy on the stage. He is a Canadian R&B singer and rapper whose biggest musical influence is Pharrell Williams. Jahkoy signed to Def Jam Recordings early this year! Check him out below:

Lucas DiPasquale – this Markham native has a very unique sound that we loved. He describes his music as “new” which is probably the best way to describe it! As many of today’s biggest artists, Lucas also got his start on YouTube after posting mashup acoustic of Jamaican dancehall artist Popcaan that quickly went viral. He released his debut EP “Post Secondary” in October 2015. Check him out here:

Alx Veliz – His music has been all over the radio lately and he’s even made some of Spotify’s latin music playlists! Alx is also from Toronto, and has Guatemalan roots. During his set he performed his latest single “Dancing Kizomba” and definitely got the crowd dancing! The song has been certified Gold in Spain already, we can’t wait to see what the future holds for Alx! You can checkout his new EP “Love Has No Languagehere.

Tor Miller – He’s an indie pop singer from Brooklyn, New York who signed to Glassnote Records in early 2014.  Miller has described his biggest musical influence to be David Bowie. Check him out here!

Hailee Steinfeld – This girl totally killed it last night! She sounded even better than on her EP HAIZ and sang crowd favourites “Love Myself” and “Rock Bottom”. The 19 year old singer/ model/ actress has been crazy busy the past few years after starring in “Pitch Perfect 2”, Taylor Swift‘s music video for “Bad Blood”, and signing to Republic Records. Check out her video for “Rock Bottom” below.
