It’s another year of North by North West (NXNE) in Toronto, as expected the team behind the scenes brings Toronto fans another year of highly anticipated performances. This year, we couldn’t miss the fantastic line-up of Wu-Tang’s legendary Ghostface Killah and TDE’s Schoolboy Q, which was held at the Port Lands grounds.
Hosted at the Port Lands, there were opening acts which included Shamir, Tasha The Amazon and Mike Jenkins. It’s unfortunate that I wasn’t able to catch the young talents of Toronto as word of the street is that the trio have been garnering quite the following in Toronto.
The legendary Wu-Tang Clan member, Ghostface Killah took to the stage to give day-one fans a treat with a performance of “C.R.E.A.M.”, “Incarcerated Scarfaces”, “One” and much more. At least for me, in that moment along with the cool winds and beating sun reminded me of the good ol’ summer days with my friends blaring old school hip-hop music in our cars.
Sheek Louch (of The LOX) also made a guest appearance by joining the stage alongside Ghostface Killah as they performed old school anthem’s like “All About The Benjamins” and “24 Hours To Live”. Before Ghostface closed off his performance, he invited a fan on stage to rap an Ol’ Dirty Bastard verse as well as some ladies to join him on stage a performance of “Cherchez La Ghost”, which gave on-lookers a sight to see.
With the fast approaching release of second studio album, “Blank Faces“, TDE’s own Schoolboy Q took to the stage to give fans a range of music from his ever growing archive of music. Even though most of his single came from his “Oxymoron” album, he performed fan favourites songs like “Man Of The Year”, “Hands on The Wheel” and verses from collaborations like Tinashe‘s “2 On” and A$AP Ferg‘s “Work” He was a good energy and vibe. He also reminded the crowd that today (June 18th) was Kendrick Lamar‘s birthday, to which he dedicated songs like “Alright” to celebrate K. Dot’s birthday.
“Black Faces” is scheduled to hit store shelves on July 8th, 2016. His lead single at the moment is “THat Part” featuring Kanye West. Not much is known about his upcoming album, but if it’s anything like his performance, catalogue of music, and vibe – fans can only expect good things.
