Music’s biggest and funnest night happens only once a year, as we all anticipate in front of our TV screens to see who will win, who’s wearing what, and who will pull a Kanye by interrupting an artist accepting an award?! Yup, you guessed it; we’re talking about the MTV Video Music Awards and last night, just like every other year, this show was definitely one for the books!
Without further ado, here are the top (5) five moments from this year’s show:
1.) Opening of VMAs:
Rihanna kicked off the VMAs performing some of her greatest hits while sporting an all-pink corset and thigh high boots. She later returned to the stage and had the crowd on their feet with a dancehall medley, earning her a standing ovation.
2.) Kanye West Takes The Stage: “That’s Why I Called Her!”
As if we couldn’t get enough of Kanye West and his big mouth! The rapper was given 4 minutes by the folks at MTV to do whatever he wants…and boy did he take advantage! He took the time to debut his new song ‘Fade’ along with the video, and then went on a rant about success, fame, and of course, mentioned his ‘Famous’ video. He then somehow went from talking about the violence happening in America, to saying that he loves all artists, including Taylor Swift, in which he addressed the issue by saying “That’s why I called her!” Needless to say, many were left amazed but somewhat confused.
3.) Beyonce Performs “Lemonade” Melody and Slays It!
What can we say about Beyoncé?! She brought ‘Lemonade’ to the VMAs and absolutely killed her live performance. Not only did she have everyone singing to her songs, but she showed a different side of herself; a more aggressive and ferocious Beyoncé. There was fire…and a whole lot of cursing!
4.) Britney Spears makes a return to the VMA Stage: “She’s baaaaack!”
When looking back at some of the most memorable moments in the history of the VMAs, one name never seems to be missing; the one of pop star Britney Spears. From her infamous kiss with Madonna, to her performance of ‘Slave 4 U’ with a snake on her arms, she never ceases to amaze us! Spears finally made her return last night, after a nine-year absence, and performed her single ‘Make Me’, alongside rapper G-Eazy. The song is off of her new album titled ‘Glory’. Even though it’s been awhile since her last appearance, we can agree that Britney’s still got it!
5.) Save The Best For Last! Drake Surprises Rihanna with the Video Vanguard Award
The MTV Video Music Awards first aired back in 1984; the same time the Video Vanguard Award was introduced, and the first ones to receive it were David Bowie and the Beatles. In 1991, the award was renamed the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, honoring the talented and the ones who’ve had an impact on the MTV culture. This year, Rihanna was named recipient of the famous “moon man”, but it was the person who handed it to her that caught everyone by surprise! Of course, Drake showed up to not only give her the award, but an epic speech to go along with it. After introducing her and basically declaring his love for her, he leaned in for a kiss, but got a hug from the songstress instead.
