Imagine this: you’re 24 years old, you’ve dreamed of being a singer all your life and after auditioning for American Idol and uploading videos on YouTube, you get discovered by one of the world’s biggest artists who ends up signing you to his own record label! That’s exactly what happened with California native Joelle James. After R&B sensation Chris Brown found James on the internet, he immediately signed her onto his CBE record label. The journey has only begun for Joelle, but her background is even more interesting than most would think it would be.
Joelle started singing in her church choir at a very young age and realized at that moment that music was her passion (and still is to this day!). She made her television debut at the age of 12 years old on Star Search and even sang for the legendary Ray Charles. While attending the Berklee College of Music, James would gather with her friends and upload videos on YouTube for fun until they convinced her that she needed to do this on a regular basis in order for her talent to be heard. At first, Joelle was hesitant; but the more videos she would post, the more feedback she would get, which motivated her even more to do so. Not only was she able to create her own fan base, she even caught the attention of a major superstar!
After getting different opportunities from several names in the music industry, Joelle received a message from Chris Brown‘s management team saying that they wanted to meet with her. She was being cautious as to who was reaching out to her and after doing her research, she figured out that it was indeed from the singer’s camp. When James met Chris, she couldn’t believe it herself and was in shock; not only was she grateful for being in his presence, she was honoured when asked to join his CBE (Chris Brown Entertainment) family.
Her soulful voice and urban pop sound make for great music; and she can definitely hit those high notes! I checked out some of her song covers from her videos on YouTube and was just amazed as to how gifted this young girl really is. I also discovered that she’s the voice on Chris Brown’s hit “Leave the Club” and they both recently collaborated again for the R&B star’s latest track titled “Scream”. The song is featured on Kevin Hart’s ‘What Now? The Mixtape Presents Chocolate Droppa’.
Next up for this musical sensation is the release of her debut album, which she is currently working on; and with Brown by her side, it will no doubt be a chart topper.
