Interview: Tilsen

This week we caught up with rising Toronto pop artist Tilsen! She’s performed alongside many well known Canadian artists and just made her way into the pop music scene earlier this year with her debut single “Hurts”. Check out our interview below:

Congratulations on the release of your sophomore single “Doubt” this summer! Can you tell us a bit more about this release?

Thank you! When I wrote Doubt, I had been thinking about somebody that I love and how I don’t want them to ever have to worry about my feelings going away; That I was determined to make sure they don’t have to. I’m really proud to share Doubt because it speaks about lasting love in a time where short-term relationships are the norm. Committing to someone and sharing all of yourself can be daunting. I think sharing that sentiment in song could resonate with a lot of people who are losing faith in being able to find love like that.

Because Doubt is such a bop, I started to work on dance for the music video as soon as the song was written. I wanted to let you peer into my world a little bit in the music video and I’m so excited to share it with you.

You’ve been playing shows throughout Toronto for a while, what’s been the most memorable experience?

Although it’s easy to focus on and remember most clearly whatever went wrong in a show (something always does), I have to say that after a couple years writing new material, I was just so excited to perform my songs that the most memorable experience for me would be when I performed Doubt, Hurts and the rest of my new songs for the the first time. It was an intimate acoustic showcase in March 2019. I’ve been writing songs for 10 years now but I have never been this proud of my songs before so it felt good.

What are three things anyone new to your music should know about you?

1. I make pop music. I like to think it’s full of catchy melodies, sparse production and honest lyrics.

2. All of my songs’ lyrics are based on my own personal experiences, and feelings. I use writing as a way to work through my thoughts and make sense of things that I am going through or have gone through. I find human psychology and the way that we love each other fascinating. I see each song like a puzzle and as I’m trying to find the right words sometimes I discover truths. That’s when it feels like magic to me.

3. I hope my songs send out a signal to the people listening who have felt the same things as me, that I understand and we’re together in that. I hope my music helps listeners to understand themselves and those they love a little better. I hope it inspires them to be more loving and understanding.

What’s coming up in the next few months? Will there be an album release?

I’ll be releasing my third single in the next few months! There is an EP on its way, coming early next year.

What are you a bestfan of?

Greta Thunberg – Using her voice to motivate people into action in facing the climate crisis. If you haven’t already, you should watch this young girl speak at United Nations COP 24. I was moved to tears.
